Chocolate Butterfly was founded in 2001. Influenced by a rejuvenated appreciation of Prince’s early music and an admiration for black artists willing to experiment, the band collaborated with guitarist Masa Kohama and rapper Slimkid3 of The Pharcyde to create unique and edgy urban neo-soul music.

Though Chocolate Butterfly has never performed live, their studio album received attention internationally, as it was played by DJs in the US, UK, and Australia. Hollywood quickly recognized the sophisticated sounds of Chocolate Butterfly — songs “Ode to King/Everything is Alright,” “Satisfation,” and “A Love Contagious,” have been licensed numerous times in films and on television, such as Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail and I Can Do Bad All By Myself.
